The Library is very excited about our upcoming ebook service that will be premiering in late-February. But did you know that we can't buy ebooks from many publishers? Sadly, unlike a regular person, a library cannot pay Amazon or Barnes & Noble for an ebook and then lend it out to people. We can buy a printed book from these companies, stick it on the shelf, and lend it out - but digital content is treated differently by the publishers and the companies who manage digital content licensing. We want to offer you these ebooks, but the companies won't let us.

Classical Concert

The evening will feature a fascinating look at what makes theatrical songs tick, musically and dramatically, with performances of songs by Broadway's greatest writers. The Library of Congress, in partnership with the Government Printing Office, have released an iPad app for the Congressional Record. The Congressional Record contains the debates, proceedings and activities of the Congress of the United States. Content goes back to 1995. The app can be found here.

The U.S. Government Printing Office (GPO) has released its first mobile Web application (app), which provides the public with quick, easy access to information on Members of Congress. Based on the Guide to the House and Senate Members and information in the Congressional Pictorial Directory, the app allows users to browse for Members of Congress by last name, state, chamber, or party. Additionally, users can search by first and last name.

Emergency Alert System

On Wednesday, November 9th at 11:00 am FEMA, the FCC, and the NOAA will conduct a nationwide test of the emergency alert system. It will last approximately 45 to 60 seconds. During this period regularly scheduled television, radio, cable, and satellite shows will be interrupted. So don't worry - it's only a test, repeat, it's only a test!

Courses are offered every quarter on a wide variety of subjects, and participating patrons are able to practice hands-on with a dedicated laptop computer (courtesy of the Arcadia Public Library Foundation). Classes are 75-90 minutes in length, have limited enrollment, and certain prerequisites apply. Minimum age is 9th grade. Courses repeat on each of the dates listed below, so pick the session that works for you. And they’re free! Registration starts on Tuesday, 9/13. Pentagon Papers

The Pentagon Papers, officially titled "Report of the Office of the Secretary of Defense Vietnam Task Force", was commissioned by Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara in 1967. In June of 1971, small portions of the report were leaked to the press and widely distributed. However, the publications of the report that resulted from these leaks were incomplete and suffered from many quality issues.

On the 40th anniversary of the leak to the press, the National Archives, along with the Kennedy, Johnson, and Nixon Presidential Libraries, has released the complete report. The 48 boxes in this series contain a complete copy of the 7,000 page report along with numerous copies of different volumes of the report, all declassified. Approximately 34% of the report is available for the first time.

Current Exhibit: Eaton's Santa Anita Hotel and Restaurant

"Come for a day, or come to stay." On display now through the end of May: photos and memorabilia from Eaton's Santa Anita Hotel and Restaurant, formerly located at 1130-1150 W. Colorado Blvd. in Arcadia, from 1939-1969, on historic Route 66. The hotel had 58 rooms in a series of one-story bungalows surrounded by a landscaped court and swimming pool. Items on display include menus, ads, postcards, stationary, a key fob, and pictures of Charles Eaton, his wife, friends, and staff. Eaton's was demolished and in its place is now a Coco's Restaurant.

Kaleidoscope Concert

The Government Printing Office has authenticated the document by digital signature, which assures the public that the document has not been changed or altered. BP National Commission Report

Introducing FDSys

For more than 15 years, GPO Access has been America's source for Government information online, but now the Government Printing Office (GPO) is unveiling the next generation of Government information online with GPO's Federal Digital System (FDsys).

FDsys provides free online access to official Federal Government publications. Through FDsys, you are able to:
- Search for documents and publications
- Browse for documents and publications
- Access metadata about documents and publications
- Download documents and publications in multiple renditions or file formats

GPO Access and FDSys will be updated in parallel for six months. After this time FDSys will become the primary source for online Government information. Check it out!

Science.gov has a new image search you might want to check out. With it you can quickly find images of animals and plants, weather and space, the earth and the sun, and much more. The information is free and no registration is required. If you're not familiar with Science.gov, it's the federal gateway to more than 42 scientific databases and 200 million pages of science information, and provides access to over 2000 scientific websites from 18 organizations within 14 federal science agencies. Very cool!

It's simple! The new catalog offers simplified searching. Misspelled or mistyped words won't end your search!
You can suggest new titles for the Library to purchase right from the Catalog.
You can add items to a personal, private list. You could use this list to keep track of books you've read or want to read. Only you can see this list when you log in.
You can place your own comments or reviews for items in the Catalog.
You can add tags (personally meaningful terms) to items in the Catalog.
You can set up an RSS feed and be notified when new items are available by authors or subjects you select.
You can place requests on different items at one time without having to retype your Library card number! (there is still a reserve charge for each item)
You can receive notices by e-mail and decide for yourself when you want to receive them!
Book reviews are available right from the Catalog.
You can browse the shelf virtually by looking for other books in the same area.
It features book lists including new books for adult, teen and children, DVDs and best sellers.

Why a New Library Catalog?

Cost savings!
The Arcadia Public Library is very excited about the new implementation of the open source integrated library system (ILS) called Koha. Through a grant from the California State Library, the Arcadia Public Library was able to cover some of the initial costs to change over to this new system. The Library contracted with ByWater Solutions who so diligently worked with the Library over these past several months to make this migration happen.

Koha is the name of the open source software that we have moved to. It was originally developed in New Zealand by Katipo Communications Ltd. for Horowhenua Library Trust. It first went live in January 2000. Koha is currently maintained by a team of software providers and library technology staff from around the world. There are over 1,000 libraries running on Koha internationally.

Why Koha and why now? The past two years have been financially tough for public libraries and Arcadia Public Library has been no exception. The Library was asked to hold the line on costs and/or reduce costs as much as feasible. Costs for the old ILS continued to climb every year and the Library was unsuccessful in getting the vendor to keep costs the same or to reduce them. The Library has been interested in an open source library system for a couple of years and when staff compared costs, it was very impressive with what was "free" with an open source package. This included the initial purchase, additional modules that were unattainable due to high costs before, upgrades, licensing and more. It's not completely free but it is a big savings from what was being paid. The Arcadia Public Library is the first Library in Southern California and second in the State of California to move to an open source Library Catalog.

Today is the grand opening of the new Library Catalog and the unveiling of its new name. There were 58 entries for the Name the Catalog contest and the winning name is (drum roll please) "Arcadia Searchlight". Thanks to each and every one of you that participated in helping to name the Catalog.

New Library Catalog Coming Soon!

The grand opening of the new Library Catalog will debut on December 13. On this day, the winning catalog name will also be unveiled. As staff busily prepares for the switchover, please do not place holds between November 24 and December 12. These holds will not be captured in the new system. We think you will like some of the features in the new catalog including it's simplicity; the ability to create your very own personal and private lists; receive notices by e-mail and decide for yourself when you want to receive them; and place all of your holds at one time...fast, fast, fast!

The library has a new resource for parents and teens: Tuition Funding Sources. Tuition Funding Sources is a database designed to help students find scholarships, college, and career information. It offers students the largest scholarship database in the world with over $41 billion in scholarship awards along with a career personality test and detailed college and career information. Library Closed Wed. October 6

The Library will be closed Wednesday, October 6 for staff training for a new online catalog that will debut in mid-December. The Library's website http://library.ci.arcadia.ca.us will still be available, including the catalog and the many free electronic resources, (including full-text articles). "We are very excited about implementing this new Open Source Integrated Library System (ILS) called Koha" said Director of Library and Museum Services Director Carolyn Garner-Reagan. "This system will have many new features for Library patrons and at a much lower annual cost than our current system. We are also very pleased to be one of two libraries in California to receive funding for the data conversion portion of the Open Source Open Libraries project (http://opensource.califa.org) and funding from the City for the necessary new hardware."

Regular hours will resume on Thursday, October 7, 2010.

Local author Meredith Babeaux Brucker will lead a free 8-week Writer's Critique workshop beginning September 18. Students will learn about time management and motivational techniques; how to deal with rejection; how to best approach editors and agents and most importantly, how to re-write. Back to school time can be one of the most exciting times in your child's school year but that excitement can also cause anxiety. Some children may worry about making friends, handling tough assignments or simply fitting in to their new surroundings. Fortunately, there are great books to help deal with those fears and they can all be found at the Arcadia Public Library.

You've seen them. Children zooming through the APL entry doors to get to the Jerry Broadwell Children's Room to log in their reading hours and get their prize for the week. And, being a good library blog reader, you probably know during the summer, libraries across the country offer programs to keep children entertained and engaged in reading. But do you know why?

Studies have shown those who are motivated to read will read more. Reading more increases one's vocabulary and encourages more reading increasing one's vocabulary...OK, you get the picture. Don't believe it? Come into the Library any day during the next six weeks and you'll see children, adults and yes, even teens motivated to read. Whether it's for a prize or just for the fun of it, summer is the time to exercise your mind. Grownups -- this also means you! No excuses, we have a summer reading program just for you, too.

So read and get everyone around you reading. Know someone who likes to cook? Have them read recipes (kids love this). Commute to work or taking a family car trip? Get a book on CD or download one -- yes, they count! But whatever you do, just keep reading! This one's no pain and all gain.

P.S. We have an amazing array of activities for Adults, Teens and Children in celebration of our summer reading program. It's also a great way to stay motivated.

The Arcadia Public Library offers special programs, events and incentives designed to get the whole family excited about reading and this summer is no exception.

Just for Kids
Beginning June 14, children can sign up to Make A Splash @ the Arcadia Public Library. Rewarded for participating, children receive a variety of weekly incentives and the chance to win even more great prizes based on the number of hours they spend reading each week.

Children can start making this a memorable summer by entering our annual SRP Bookmark contest currently going on in the Children's Room. Or download forms directly from our website. Entries are due by April 17.

Make Waves @ the Arcadia Public Library

Teens aren't left out of the fun when they sign up for the reading program created exclusively for them. They'll also have the chance to earn prizes and incentives all summer long just for reading and participating.

Courses are offered every quarter on a wide variety of subjects, and participating patrons are able to practice hands-on with a dedicated laptop computer (courtesy of the Arcadia Public Library Foundation). Classes are 75-90 minutes in length, have limited enrollment, and certain prerequisites apply. Minimum age is 9th grade. President's 2011 Budget Released

The President's Budget of the United States Government, Fiscal Year 2011, is now available from the United States Government Printing Office. The public can search or browse the budget here. FY 2011 Budget documents are available in PDF, with many of the tables also available for separate viewing and downloading as spreadsheets in xls and comma delimited formats.
