Charles Shugert was the proprietor of The House of Toys, an inviting store that once occupied 111-113 East Huntington Drive. This store was an institution during the late 1950s in Arcadia but closed its doors around 1961. The site now stands as Arcadia Shotokan Karate.
If you’re unfamiliar with the “lay away” service advertised in the banner above the store, it is an nearly extinct method by which people can pay for expensive goods. The customer pays a deposit and makes periodic payments, but does not receive the merchandise until the balance is paid in full. The merchant charges a fee but no interest. These days, people opt to use credit cards to get their goods now but pay dearly later.
